URGENT CALL FOR SOLIDARITY AND ACTION ON THE ANTI-HOMOSEXUALITY BILLS IN UGANDA AND RWANDA
Most of us are aware of the situation that is going on in Uganda and Rwanda now. The government of Uganda and Rwanda have introduced Anti-Homosexuality Bills that if passed into law will intensify penalties against acts of homosexuality as they term them. Many of us (international allies and LGBTI org in Uganda and Rwanda) have been organizing and mobilizing to prepare for actions that we can take as a collective to respond to this situation. Now, the government of Uganda has tabled the Bill already in parliament on the 14th of October. As we talk the Bill is before parliament and can be passed into law at any time. There are various problems about this Bill. If it is passed into law it will affect many people’s lives including women, children, people living with HIV/AIDS, freedom of press and expression, NGO’s doing work on sexual rights, Ugandan citizens supporting sexual rights, LGBTI people and organizations in Uganda who reside in and outside of Uganda, international human rights treaties that enforce a culture of human rights protection in Uganda and donor agencies supporting sexual rights organizations and work in Uganda and anywhere else.
