THE WESTERN CAPE END ALLIANCE
Activists, Human Rights on Defenders, Feminists and Comrades
The 07-07-07 Campaign and The Western Cape End Hate Alliance invites you to march for justice in the Zoliswa Nkonyana murder trial.
When are we marching: FRIDAY, 7 AUGUST 2009, 09h00 (Gather at the Grand Parade, Darling StreetCape Town)
WHY WE ARE MARCHING:
Zoliswa Nkonyana, a 19-year-old black lesbian was murdered in Khayelitsha on the 4th February 2006, because she was lesbian. Nine men are on trial for her murder and the attempted murder of two state witnesses. The arrests were made in February 2006 and trial began in Dec 2006. Since then there have been 21 court appearances.
Trial proceeded at only one of these 21 court appearances.
The main state witness in this case gave her initial testimony 2 years after trial began.
She has yet to be cross-examined on testimony she have in Dec 2008.
More than three years have passed since Zoliswa’s murder.
It has become increasingly clear that the Khayelitsha Magistrates Court is incapable of taking this case forward and as such we are demanding that the matter be transferred to the CapeHigh Court immediately. We are approaching all the relevant authorities to this effect and taking all necessary actions to ensure our demands are met. Justice for Zoliswa is long overdue and we can no longer watch injustice prevail in a court of law.
WE CALL ON ORGANISATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS TO:
· march with us
· mobilise your constituencies and networks to join the march
· bring your organisations’ banner to the march
